One Last Music- Culture: The Boot, Kicking Through History with Music

Modern Italian music encompasses a wide range of genres and styles, reflecting the country's vibrant contemporary music scene. Itailian music, like many, encompasses a rich and diverse heritage that reflects the Italian individuals current and past.

I was extremely interested in the instruments of Italy thanks to my knowledge of the accordion which it was redesigned in Italy. There are several traditional Italian instruments that are popular and have been part of Italian music for centuries. Here are some notable Italian instruments: The mandolin is a stringed instrument that belongs to the lute family. It has a pear-shaped body and is played by plucking the strings with a plectrum. The mandolin is widely used in traditional Italian music, particularly in genres like Neapolitan and Sicilian folk music. The accordion is a portable wind instrument that is played by compressing and expanding the bellows while pressing the keys or buttons. It is commonly used in various Italian music styles, including folk, tango, and popular music. The violin, known as "violino" in Italian, is a string instrument that is played with a bow. It is widely used in classical music and also has a significant presence in traditional Italian folk music. Classical guitar: The classical guitar, or "chitarra classica" in Italian, is a plucked string instrument with nylon strings. It is used in a variety of musical genres, including classical music, folk music, and popular Italian song. The tambourine, or "tamburello" in Italian, is a percussion instrument consisting of a circular frame with jingles or small cymbals. It is commonly used in traditional Italian folk music, particularly in the southern regions of Italy. The organetto, also known as a diatonic button accordion, is a type of accordion with a smaller range and fewer buttons. It is commonly found in Italian folk music and is known for its distinct sound. The cornetto, also called the zink, is a wind instrument made of wood or ivory with finger holes and a cup-shaped mouthpiece similar to a trumpet. It was popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods and is still occasionally used in early music performances. There are many more instruments used in different regions and musical styles throughout the country.

I looked into two of the more popular and current interest in genres. Below are some popular genres and notable artists in modern Italian music:

Pop Music:

Remaining as a dominant genre in Italy, featuring catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, Italian pop similar to British and American pop, in the techno and trance kind of way. Italian pop artists include Laura Pausini, Tiziano Ferro, Eros Ramazzotti, and Elisa which all date back to about 10 years ago in their top hits but seem to keep their popularity. Below, you can listen to Tiziano’s song “Tardes Negras” which ends with the words “Here without you” after describing a what sounds to be a heart break.

Indie and Alternative:

The indie and alternative music scene in Italy continues to thrive, with bands like Afterhours, Verdena, and Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti pushing creative boundaries and gaining a dedicated following. Italy has a strong tradition of singer-songwriters who craft intimate and introspective songs. They address issues such as inequality, cultural identity, and environmental concerns, reflecting the current socio-politically landscape of Italy. The indie and alternative music scene in Italy has grown significantly, with the artist taking control of their own music production and festivals. Below, you can take a listen to the catchy “Solo Un Grande Sasso” by Verdena.
